FOUNDER: Olivier Kamanda

Olivier Kamanda, FPD Founder
Olivier Kamanda is the founder and editor emeritus of Foreign Policy Digest.  He is a Senior Advisor and Speechwriter for Secrerary of State Hillary Clinton.
 
Formerly a columnist for the Huffington Post on world affairs, Olivier has conducted extensive research on nuclear power technology, regulatory law and proliferation issues.  Olivier served as a member of the Obama-Biden Campaign's Defense Policy Committee. In addition he has written on the rule of law in post-conflict societies and transitional justice in central Africa. Prior to founding the Foreign Policy Digest, Olivier was Deputy Campaign Manager for Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler. He also served as a Senior Management Analyst in BearingPoint's Homeland Security Sector.

Olivier has served on a number of boards including the Board of Trustees of Princeton University and the Board of Directors of the Nepalese Children's Education Fund. He is also a Principal of the Truman National Security Project. Olivier received his B.S.E from Princeton University in Operations Research & Financial Engineering and his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School where he was an executive editor of the Journal of International Law.

Adam Benz, FPD Editor-in-Chief
Adam Benz is Editor-in-Chief of Foreign Policy Digest. He practices as an attorney and is a member of member of the California and District of Columbia bar associations.

Adam has worked as an associate attorney at Homer Law, Chartered, a small law firm specializing in tribal law, federal lobbying, and tribal-state intergovernmental relations, as well as on transnational legal issues, including investigations of Latin American-based corporations for potential violations of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Adam’s international affairs experience includes work with the United Nations Consultation on Women and the Right to Housing, the Inter-American Dialogue, and the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights, and the Honduran chapter of Save the Children. He has also worked on school desegregation litigation as a legal intern at the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division Educational Opportunities Section. Adam has collaborated with indigenous communities in rural Honduras and Belize on multiple sustainable community development projects. He was one of the founders of the first official academic exchange between Princeton University and the University of Havana, and speaks Spanish and Portuguese.

Adam obtained his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, where he majored in Politics, earning a Certificate in Latin American Studies. He completed his graduate education at the George Washington University, where he received a J.D. from the law school along with a M.A. in International Affairs with a double concentration in International Law and International Economics at the Elliott School of International Affairs. He has also studied international human rights law at Oxford University.

Robert Friedman, FPD Managing Editor
Robert Friedman is Managing Editor of Foreign Policy Digest. He is an attorney in the Washington D.C. office of Venable LLP. Robert is also a non-resident Fellow at the Georgetown Center on National Security and the Law and a Principal in the Truman National Security Project.

Previously, Robert was a Law Clerk on the Senate Judiciary Committee staff of Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) where he worked on national security issues and executive and judicial nominations. He also served as an Aide to Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and spent time working for the Vice Chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Robert served as a member of the Obama-Biden Campaign's Defense Policy Committee.

Robert graduated cum laude from the Georgetown University Law Center where he was the Senior Notes Editor for the Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law. He received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Emory University, a Master’s in Government from Johns Hopkins University and studied Public International Law and Conflict Resolution at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy. 

ADMINISTRATIVE EDITOR: Bronwen de Sena
 
Bronwen De Sena is the Administrative Editor of Foreign Policy Digest. She currently works on national security issues in Washington, DC.

Bronwen previously worked at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars where she helped launch and promote events, including Barack Obama’s first foreign policy speech as a presidential nominee and the inauguration of Henry Kissinger’s Asia Institute. In addition, she has previously worked on several academic projects focusing on strategic issues, including NATO troop negotiations and a risk analysis on Belarus, on behalf of the Canada Research Chair for International Security and Ethnic Conflict.

Working for The New York Times Market Research, Bronwen conducted several data analyses for luxury advertisers. She has also served as a features writer and editor for Civil Society, a newsletter tracking democratic trends in the Middle East, produced by Ibn Khaldun Development Center at the American University in Cairo. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Bronwen graduated in May 2009 from McGill University with Great Distinction. She speaks German, Russian, and Mandarin. Her first published work was a children’s book, Babu’s Babushka, when she was 12.

Katherine Southwick is Africa Regional Editor of Foreign Policy Digest. She works in international law and development issues in Washington, DC. She mostly grew up in Africa and graduated from Yale College and Yale Law School, where she was co-editor-in-chief of the Yale Human Rights and Development Law Journal. From 2006-2008, Katherine was a research fellow at Refugees International, a Washington DC-based humanitarian advocacy organization, where she focused on statelessness and conflict issues in Africa. She previously clerked for a federal judge and worked in private practice, in the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and the U.S. State Department's Office of the Legal Adviser. Katherine has also worked for nongovernmental organizations in India, Thailand, and Uganda, with an emphasis on internal displacement, refugee and asylum issues, and transitional justice. Katherine has commented on the northern Uganda conflict and other human rights issues in major news media and scholarly publications.

Sean Bartlett is Americas Regional Editor of Foreign Policy Digest. He currently works as a press aide in Congress. Sean has held positions with the Organization of American States, the Council on Hemispheric Affairs, and SNV Netherlands Development Organization. In 2007, Sean studied sustainable development and human rights in Costa Rica. He graduated cum laude from Stony Brook University with a B.A. in Political Science, with concentrations in International Studies and Spanish, and holds a M.A. from American University’s School of International Service in Ethics, Peace & Global Affairs with a concentration in Conflict Resolution.

Jung Hwa Song is Asia Pacific Regional Editor of Foreign Policy Digest. She is an M.A. candidate in International Economics and Development at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to SAIS, Jung produced and managed online content for "World News with Charles Gibson" and worked as an associate at Diligence LLC, a global risk consulting and corporate intelligence firm. She has also worked at the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, helping to organize conferences while conducting research on U.S.-China energy policy and Chinese urban planning. Jung has conducted extensive field research on Chinese policy toward North Korean border crossers and has written op-eds on U.S.-China-North Korean relations as a Young Scholar at the Center for Strategic International Studies. She has also worked as an editorial assistant to the former director of Korean research at Columbia University, Professor Samuel Kim. Jung received her A.B. from Princeton University and has a certificate in Mandarin Chinese from Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Matthew Lamm is Europe Russia Regional Editor of Foreign Policy Digest. He practices as an attorney at Avenue Settlement Corporation in Washington, DC. Matthew graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. in Russian Language and International Studies from the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, which included studies in Peru, Austria, and Russia. He earned his J.D. at George Washington University Law School, having also studied international human rights law at Oxford University. A member of the District of Columbia and Maryland Bar, Matthew is also a registered tribal member of the Ogallala Lakota Sioux, Pine Ridge Agency. He speaks Russian, German and Spanish.

Marc Sorel is Middle East Regional Editor of Foreign Policy Digest. He is a third-year graduate student in the four-year JD-MSFS program in law and international relations at Georgetown University. At Georgetown, Marc is a Research Assistant at the Center on National Security and the Law. He has worked for the U.S. Departments of State, Defense, and Homeland Security, and the United Nations. At the State Department, he joined the U.S. delegation to the June 2009 meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors in Vienna. Marc has commented on public service, national security, and foreign policy in the news media and student leadership training seminars. He has also worked in private practice, focusing on commercial litigation, international arbitration, and asylum matters.

Mahanth Joishy is South Asia Regional Editor of Foreign Policy Digest. He is Deputy Director of Operations for the New York City Parks & Recreation Department, where he works on vehicle fleet management, emergency response, environmental sustainability, technology initiatives, and volunteer programs. He has previously worked at the Indian Embassy to the United States and at the U.S. Department of Commerce. Mahanth graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor's in Science, Technology, and International Affairs and has completed a Master's in Urban Studies at Queens College. Mahanth was Associate Editor and one of the founders of the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs. He speaks Spanish, Hindi, Konkani and Kannada.

John Lyman completed a M.A. in European Studies at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, where he concentrated in missile defense and disarmament treaties. He earned a B.A. in Political Science with a concentration on non-state actors and is completing a second bachelor's in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness at Virginia Commonwealth University. John has written extensively on military and defense issues and has presented his findings at a variety of academic conferences, including the University of Amersterdam and Virginia Commonwealth University. He will be presenting on U.S. military procurement practices at the New York State Political Science Association 2010 Annual Conference.
